The Mysteries of Sleep

DragonWhy do we sleep? You know that scientists still don’t have a common understanding to this question. Sleep is not really the opposite of being awake. I mean, your brain is still doing a lot while you’re sleeping. Some animals actually really do sleep with “one eye open”. These animals undergo something called unihemispherical sleep. Each eye is connected to the opposite half of the brain. Half their brain actually goes to sleep and the corresponding (opposite) eye closes.

Here’s my glimpse into the future — What if humans could gain this power? To go to sleep (and provide whatever benefits sleep affords the brain) and still be able to be conscious with the other side of their brain? We could get MORE out of life! Or could we?

Speaking as someone who constantly struggles with insomnia, I would find it heavenly to be able to sleep for 9 hours a night with BOTH eyes closed! LOL

Would we be able to get anything done or would it be like being a passenger stuck in a car while the driver takes a snooze? If nothing else, I guess one side of my brain could catch up on all the shows that I’ve missed… :)
